“This time around, we fully understood why we need basic marketing as early as possible. You can’t wait for the launch to validate your story, track competitors, discover threats, or get feedback from potential buyers”

Ronnie Sternberg, Co-Founder at ClarityQ and SafeDK (acquired by AppLovin)

When investors ask founders not to invest in marketing too early, what they really mean is: don’t burn big budgets on campaigns. Inexperienced founders often misunderstand this, neglecting to run any market validation testing while they work on their initial product availability.

The result? They are often too late to acknowledge critical market fit mistakes.

And that’s exactly why stealth-mode marketing is essential

Over the years we’ve developed CICD-like sprint method that allows stealth startups to gain market feedback fast, learn what’s working (or not), and optimize their story to fit the market.

The main building blocks include: marketing competitive analysis, initial messaging sprint, basic pitch materials, and fast mode testing.

Conclusions and strategy - Gearing up for launch

This part concludes the sprint, listing insights and priorities for the launch activities, based on lessons learned during the sprint.

Why should marketing run before the product is available? A couple of real-life examples:

  • A startup (API dev tool) started working with us very close to the product availability release – only to discover that over the 8 months the team spent on developing the product, the market changed, multiple competitors joined the game with a better approach for the specific use case. These were clear insights coming from our marketing competitive analysis. The launch was delayed, the team had to develop new use cases, and months of work were lost.
  •  A seed-stage startup shared pipeline and conversion funnel projections with VCs as part of their fundraising materials. Low-cost A/B testing revealed their projections were inaccurate, requiring major changes to estimates, budget allocation, and timeline-based business goals. These modifications came late, rather than earlier in the process, causing burn rate problems, trust issues with investors and more.
  • A seed stage startups that started low scale marketing very early, quite a few months before the launch, and while the product was still being developed, had time to learn that the best personas responding to the story were completely different from what they initially thought- This was discovered through minimal PPC budgets, a few landing pages and a simple early-access offering, bypassing the fact that the product was not commercial yet. The result was an ultra successful launch that was planned taking into account the right audiences, the exact PR story, and the intelligence insights needed to move ahead of the competition.
